Black Panther writer-director Ryan Coogler is confirmed to be returning to helm the sequel. The huge success of Black Panther upon its release back in February cemented the character, and his world, as a new fan favourite amongst the ever-growing crowd of the MCU. While the film’s cultural impact was certainly important, its financial performance was frankly unbelievable with the picture taking in over $1 billion worldwide when all was said and done. Of course, Marvel Studios would be out of its mind not to greenlight a sequel, and now Black Panther 2 is in the first stages of moving forward.
There’s little doubt that Coogler’s hand in things made Black Panther the groundbreaking movie that it was and fans almost automatically assumed that he would be returning to shepherd its follow-up, although true to form the studio has been typically quiet with the details of the project up until now.
THR reports that Ryan Coogler is officially coming back to begin work on Black Panther 2. Coogler will serve once again as both writer and director and production is expected to get underway in late 2019 or early on in 2020.
While the news was expected, many will be thrilled to hear of Coogler’s return to Wakanda. The 32-year-old filmmaker has been signing himself on to various other projects since Black Panther first opened in cinemas, but it seems likely that Kevin Feige had probably already indicated to Coogler that Marvel would want him to do Black Panther 2 early on meaning that he has probably scheduled his other films around it. With a production start date potentially set for as early as next year it’s safe to assume the sequel has been fast tracked ahead of other titles Marvel has planned post-Avengers 4.
