James Gunn In Talks To Write ‘Suicide Squad 2’ (Updated)

Warner Bros. has snapped up writer/director James Gunn to write the script for Suicide Squad 2 with a view to having him direct the movie

James Gunn is being courted by Warner Bros. to write the script for its upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, following his firing from Disney less than three months ago. Gunn’s role in boosting the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe even further with his 2014 summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy, which also earned a sequel in 2017. The 52-year-old filmmaker’s work in bringing some of Marvel Comics’ lesser known cosmic heroes and villains into the ongoing comic book film saga was praised, but the celebration was brought to a hault after a handful of old distasteful tweets resurfaced online resulting in his termination from Marvel Studios.

Soon after Gunn’s sacking, it was reported that multiple studios were lining up to entice the writer/director to one of their projects’ among whom was WB. Many fans began to speculate that Warners could bring Gunn in to direct its in-development Green Lantern Corps. movie, a fitting choice given Gunn’s proven ability to handle space-fairing superhero teams. It seems that the studio has other plans, however.

The Wrap is reporting that James Gunn is now in talks with Warner Bros. to write the Script for Suicide Squad 2 with a view to taking on directing duties for the movie. The news indicates that the film’s previous script writer Gavin O’Connor has parted ways with the project, and his version of the movie has most likely been scrapped in favour of allowing Gunn to build from scratch.

UPDATE – Warner Bros. has now officially confirmed that Gunn is already signed on to write the Suicide Squad sequel.

Under Gunn’s leadership, Suicide Squad 2 could be a real character-driven piece akin to his work with the Guardians. Whether or not he plans to use the first film’s cast is unclear at this point, but assuming he does (as he’s making a direct sequel) the likes of Harley Quinn, Deadshot and the rest of the “Worst. Heroes. Ever” could benefit greatly from his creative input and give audiences cause to really get behind them.

Gunn’s hiring would present another strong move for DC Films, now under the headship of Walter Hamada, who has been making lots of behind-the-scenes changes recently. That being said, there’s a reason why a company like Disney decided to fire Gunn, and Warner Bros.’ decision to appoint him as a director may be seen by some to be a distasteful given the circumstances of his departure from the MCU. WB’s willingness to look over the offensive tweets may be a good financial move for the firm, however, if Gunn can bring his A-game to Suicide Squad 2.
