Although X-Men: Dark Phoenix was originally set for release this November, Fox opted to push the film back to February 2019 in order to carry out some fairly extensive reshoots after early versions of the movie were received poorly by test audiences, according to reports. The film’s A-list cast, including Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and … actress Jessica Chastain, have now returned said reshoots and filming is now underway on the Dark Phoenix‘s Montreal set.
While the X-Men franchise can be can considered an overall success at this point, given that it’s still going on after its inception courtesy of Bryan Singer 15 years ago, it has not been immune to some drops in quality here and there, and more recently most fans felt that X-Men: Apocalypse was a slight step down from its predecessor X-Men: Days of Future Past. With that, the studio really wants Dark Phoenix to do well, clearly displayed in its desire to conduct these reshoots, which it is also doing with its upcoming New Mutants movie as well.
Universo X-Men recently posted a few new set photos to Twitter providing fans with a look at Turner’s Jean Grey going head-to-head with Chastain’s as yet unknown villain. What’s interesting to note about the images is that whoever Chastain’s character is she seems to be powerful enough to go up against Jean and from the looks of it even have the upper hand at some points. Tye Sheridan’s stunt double can also be seen in the background of the third image indicating that Cyclops/Scott Summers will also have a part to play in the scene.
There have been numerous reports that these reshoots are primarily to do with the film’s third act, and what’s being shown here could very well be a final confrontation between Grey and the villain which is supported by the fact that Turner is wearing a mo-cap suit that she would probably only be in for her Phoenix transformation scenes. Of course, Chastain’s character can also be seen in a mo-cap suit signalling that her antagonist could be a CGI character, or at least have a lot of CGI involved with it.
The images could be showing the finale of the movie and if they’re anything to go by you can expect to see more of the powerful Phoenix force than was shown in X-Men: Apocalypse.
