The Fast & Furious franchise is set for a detour in 2019 with its first attempt at a spin-off with Hobbs & Shaw, starring series favourites Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham. Some of the most memorable moments of the most recent F&F title, Fast & Furious 8 (also known as Fate of the Furious) were those between Johnson’s Agent Hobbs and Statham’s Deckard Shaw, particularly their action-packed escape from prison which almost culminated in another confrontation between the two. No doubt, the dysfunctional, and highly entertaining, relationship between the pair will be preserved and added to in Hobbs & Shaw, and if things go well it could lead to further instalments involving the two characters.
Hobbs & Shaw has been in development for quite some time, the off-screen drama between the major cast members didn’t exactly help matters. Momentum begun to build, however, when earlier this year Deadpool 2 filmmaker David Leitch signed on to direct the project, and later on we got confirmation of Idris Elba’s casting as the film’s villain. Presumably, any differences between Hobbs and Shaw will be put aside to face this mutual threat.
The Rock is about to head to the London set to begin shooting the movie but ahead of his arrival wanted to let his fans know that production on Hobbs & Shaw is officially underway, sharing a photo to Instagram to mark the occasion. The image features Statham and Leitch posing next to some – you guessed it – fast cars:

DAY 1 and the evolution has officially begun. Long awaited Fast & Furious spin-off movie, #HobbsAndShaw is electric. My partner in heavy crime & fun @jasonstatham is lookin’ like $1million bucks and holdin’ it all down. Our visionary & bad ass director @davidmleitch (just directed Deadpool2) at the helm and ready to evolve the franchise in exciting and fresh new ways. And as always, our @sevenbucksprod president @hhgarcia41 capturing the dopest images thru his 📷 lens. Keep crushing on that set boys… the man known as “HOBBS” will touch down in London in two weeks. Pancakes, tequila and ass kickin’s 🥞🥃 on me. #Day1 #TheEvolution #HobbsAndShaw
Leitch himself also wanted to get the word out and shared this image to his own IG account, and while not revealing much in the way of filming it does provide a potential look at the movie’s logo which can be seen at the bottom of the slate:
While neither Johnson’s or Leitch’s images give away much in the way of detail, they do serve to notify fans that production on the movie is proceeding as planned and begin building excitement for spin-off. Johnson is currently off filming Disney’s Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt, but as soon as he’s finished there he will be hopping on a plane across the pond to face Statham once again, only this time it will be as a partner in crime rather than an adversary.
