This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War)
With the Mad Titan, Thanos, having performed his finger-snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, half the life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now faded from existence, not only on Earth. The snap echoed around the entire universe causing half its population of intelligent lifeforms to vanish. While the final moments of the film show who of the Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy team have died, there are still many other supporting characters in the franchise and it’s not been clear as to how many of them were affected by Thanos’ actions. It seems, however, that Infinity War directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo know exactly who is and isn’t around in the MCU at this point.
What we do know is that Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, Nebula and Rockett are all still alive and kicking, with Ant-Man also seeming to still be around as well. All the other heroes have faded away presumably along with a myriad of secondary characters too. Thanks to Infinity War‘s post-credits scene, Nick Fury and Maria Hill are no more, although Fury’s message to Captain Marvel will surely be a key factor in Avengers 4. But who else perished due to snap?
Speaking with Huffington Post, The Russo’s actually indicated a few characters that were killed off-screen in Avengers 3, giving fans another clue as to the potential group of people that will be left to deal with the results of the conflict in Avengers 4.
Firstly, Jaimie Alexander’s Asgardian warrior Lady Sif is no longer around post-snap. It seems Alexander wasn’t able to be involved in Thor: Ragnarok due to a scheduling conflict, sparing her character from being killed off by Hela. Unfortunately, Lady Sif is among those who vanished from existence and whether or not we will be seeing her again is unknown a this point.
Next up, Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross, the love interest of Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk is “Gone”, in the words of Joe Russo. Betty has not been seen in the MCU since the 2008 film, although her Father, General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross has been more involved of late. With Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow now more of a love interest for Bruce Banner it was unlikely we would have seen her again anyway, but the confirmation of her death shows just how detailed Kevin Feige and the Russo’s are when it comes to these movies.
Finally, The Russo’s revealed that Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May survived the events of Infinity War, although will no doubt be grieving for the loss of her nephew come Avengers 4. The last time we saw the new, younger, Aunt May was in Spider-Man: Homecoming when she find out that Peter was Spider-Man. Exactly how that revelation affected her is not known, but perhaps her grief and possible her pleading with Stark results in what’s left of the Avengers trying to reverse the events of Infinity War in Avengers 4.
