The Lowdown: Who Is Captain Marvel?

Avengers: Infinity War teases a new hero coming to the MCU but who is she and what does her arrival mean for Earth’s Mightiest?

(This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War)

Having now seen the rollercoaster ride that is Avengers: Infinity War, fans have already begun discussing the future of the MCU, particularly Avengers 4, and where Marvel Studios will be taking its ever-growing roster of heroes next. Perhaps one of the biggest points of discussion has been the post-credits scene showing Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury paging someone, who already has their own cool logo, before vanishing from existence thanks to Thanos’ half-the-life-in-the-universe-ending ‘snap’. But who was Fury trying to send a message to? None other than Brie Larson’s soon to be introduced Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, not to be confused with DC Comics’ Captain Marvel/Billy Batson (now known as Shazam), was an American air force pilot turned NASA security chief that was caught in the middle of a conflict between two Kree (an alien race in Marvel Comics) which saw a device called the Psyche-Magnitron exploding onto one of the Kree (named Mar-Vell) whilst he was protecting Carol, resulting in her absorbing his abilities and becoming a human/Kree hybrid. Originally she was known as Miss Marvel, but soon joined the Avengers whom she eventually came to lead, thus changing her name to Captain Marvel.

Danvers’ powers and abilities include superspeed, superagility, superstrength, flight, superstamina, invulnerability, energy projection, energy absorption, danger sense (similar to spidersense), regeneration, minor molecular control, cosmic awareness, and even more. It’s likely that Captain Marvel will be the MCU‘s new most powerful hero, if you couldn’t already tell by that list.

The super-powerful heroine’s upcoming film will be set in the 1990s with Earth caught in the battle between two alien races, the aforementioned Kree race and the Skrulls, which of course sets the scene for Danvers to gain her superhuman abilities. Judging by Infinity War‘s post-credits scene, and Sam Jackson being set to appear in the upcoming movie, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be involved in protecting the Earth in some way, while also looking to get their hands on some of the alien tech that will no doubt be left behind.

Perhaps the biggest question with regards to Captain Marvel is how her character will be used, if at all, in Avengers 4. With her skillset she could be a huge aid to the Avengers going forward on what will presumably be their mission to undo as much of the damage as Thanos caused with the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Infinity War, particularly with her cosmic awareness; She could well know something that the team doesn’t about what’s really going on. The fact that Nick Fury’s first and only S.O.S. was sent specifically to her indicates that he thinks she’s the best chance the heroes will have at saving the day.
