Tyrese Gibson Will Not Return For ‘Fast & Furious 9’ If It Stars The Rock

Fast & Furious’ Tyrese Gibson says that he will not be returning as his character Roman Peirce if Dwayne Johnson appears in the film.

The Fast & Furious series has been marketed as being less about franchising and more about family with every major cast member citing that they’re close with one another both on, and off, the big screen. While some of the F&F crew’s many stars have come and gone, the mainstays, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ .. and Tyrese Gibson, continue to spend much of their time and energy focusing on the long-lasting series with Fast & Furious 9 on the way in 2020 . It seems that the family unit may be experiencing some sibling rivalry, to say the least, with Gibson having posted a steady stream of social media outbursts taking aim at The Rock over the last couple of months or so.

The first signs of trouble in the nest were revealed when Tyrese publicly pleaded with Johnson not to star in a Hobbs spin-off movie which shortly after was announced to be confirmed for production with Fast & Furious 9‘s release being pushed back to the later 2020 date. Since then, Tyrese has continued to call out the People’s Champ calling him “Selfish” for his actions. Diesel himself has insisted that that F9‘s later release is nobody’s fault in an attempt to calm the situation down as much as possible.

Taking things to a whole new level, the 38-year-old Gibson has now taken to his Instagram account to announce that he will not be returning as his character Roman Pierce for Fast 9 if The Rock appears in the movie:

While Gibson’s somewhat erratic behaviour in airing this information out publicly is perhaps not the best way to resolve the conflicts that exist between the co-stars, the personal nature of his statements do point to far more serious issues surrounding the on-screen funny man’s life at the moment.

At the present time, Gibson is in the midst of a custody battle for his daughter, a very difficult situation indeed, and so there are clearly some real struggles in the actor’s life currently and of course these factors must be taken into consideration. With that said, openly quarrelling with another important member of a franchise that you’ve been given a big role in is not the smartest move, and if the studio ultimately has to decide between Gibson and The Rock it’s clear that the benefits Johnson brings to this franchise, or any other, in terms of the level of adoration he has from the public – which adds to ticket sales with people wanting to see him on the big screen – make him the better personality to hold on to from a financial perspective.

Overall, the situation is obviously not the easiest to deal with and the hope remains that the F&F family can sit down and talk about the issues at hand in order to prevent any further damage.

Fast & Furious 9 is scheduled for release in 2020.
