With the release of Thor: Ragnarok in cinemas this week, the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves ever closer to the epic finale of its third phase (Phase 3), Avengers: Infinity War. Infinity War sees Marvel Studios’ roster of established heroes, across the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, come up against the Universe’s most dangerous foe Thanos. In the past few months, however, news of the fourth Avengers film, currently scheduled for April 2019 has been ramping up, with reports indicating that Thanos will be a part of the film following the events of Infinity War.

The arrival of Thanos presents the studio’s best opportunity yet to do some housekeeping with near-future plans that involve the introduction of many new characters, Infinity War may see Marvel rearrange, and perhaps even cut, some of its current pantheon of characters in preparation for what’s to come. While we have seen some deaths, such as Agent Phil Coulson in Avengers and Quiksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron, for the most part the MCU has proven to be more comic book-esque in the way it deals with its recurring characters. We have also had some rumours going around for a while like the death of Tony Stark or Steve Rodgers in Captain America: Civil War, but these have proven to be nothing more than that.
On the probability scale, it does feel Avengers 3 is more likely to see the death, or departure, of at least one major character, in one sense because the MCU‘s heroes are all played by big-name stars who may have other plans for the future, but also because of the threat that the mad-Titan poses.
Well, we may have just gotten our biggest indication of a death in Infinity War yet with agency Central Casting Georgia (via MCU Exchange) having recently posted a casting call for a “mourners” role in Avengers 4:
Mourners: Looking for men and women over the age of 18, all ethnicities, to portray mourners. Especially looking for good character looks and expressive faces. This will be photo selected by the film’s directors! Size restrictions: Men no larger than 44 coat, women dress size 0-8. FOR NEW FACES ONLY! You cannot have worked on this project previously, or be booked on upcoming days. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Of course, it may be that the loss occurs in the fourth instalment itself rather than being a carryover from Infinity War, and whether or not the deceased is a central character remains unknown. On the other hand, it seems more likely that if this is for an entire funeral scene then it would be dedicated to a more important figure rather than a secondary one.
As for now, this news can serve to prepare fans for a loss of some sort in Infinity War so brace yourselves folks.
Avengers 4 is scheduled for an April 26th, 2019 release.
