The first wave of marketing for the Tomb Raider reboot, starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, kicks off with a new poster and trailer sneak peek.
The era of the videogame movie has yet to arrive, still, after such a promising year for the genre in 2016. Warcraft, while being championed by a few, was met with mixed reaction and Assassin’s Creed showed some promise but was ultimately panned by critics and audiences for its confusing story and choppy editing*. Ghost in the Shell looked to deliver earlier in 2017, but again the film received lukewarm reception. So, will we see a change in 2018? Well that’s what Warner Bros. and MGM are hoping with their upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.
Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander takes over the role from Angelina Jolie, who portrayed the character in two films from 2001-2003, and the change in personnel also comes with a shift in the tone and feel that director Roar Uthaug is going for. From the first images from the set, posted online late last year, it was clear to see the inspiration the film will draw from the latest Tomb Raider videogames which have seen Lara ditch the more riskee wardrobe pieces in favour of more functional expedition attire. Superficial changes aside though, the games’ stories have become more gritty and realistic, very much following in the footsteps of titles like Uncharted, with missions that go from navigating through a treacherous landscape one moment, and being viciously attacked by rival explorers (or their mercenaries) the next.
With the movie on its way into cinemas in March of next year, the studio has decided that now is the time to launch its marketing campaign, starting first with a new poster that spotlights Vikander as Croft looking rugged and clasping a climbing axe in her right hand, which hopefully indicates that we’ll see much of the puzzle-based exploration in the game brought over, as well as its fist fights and dynamic action sequences.
As is becoming increasingly common for bigger budget films these days, a sneak peek, or trailer for the trailer as some would put it, has also made its way online to alert the public to prepare for the soon-to-be-released first trailer – arriving within the next 24 hours. While only 15-seconds-long, the first real footage from Tomb Raider shown here does give us an idea of the look and atmosphere of the movie and as eluded to earlier it seems to take a lot of cues from the more recent videogame instalments.
Official Sneak Peek:
Vikander looks well-suited for the part and has no doubt worked hard to meet the physical demands that playing Croft requires. The sneak peek highlights that in particular, showing her having to think quickly while on the run as obstacles and enemies block her path. Tomb Raider will act as an origins story for the character so expect to see a lot of the focus placed Lara and much less on other characters.
