Following the unveiling of Thanos’ new look in Avengers: Infinity War (also known as Avengers 3), we are now getting confirmation that Josh Brolin’s mad Titan will be appearing in the fourth Avengers movie, currently scheduled for summer 2019. With Infinity War now just over eight months out, Marvel fans the world over are very excited to see what is pretty much the most highly anticipated film of recent times. The Avengers along with various other heroes such as Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be teaming up to stop the MCU‘s big bad Thanos from causing universe-wide chaos with his Infinity Gauntlet, containing the six Infinity Stones depicted throughout the course of the franchise.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who have become a mainstay at Marvel Studios following their efforts with titles Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, are currently helming Avengers 3, and the mammoth task of balancing all of the series’ superheroes in one film, but are also set to bring us Avengers 4. Marvel seemed to have taken a step back from the idea that Infinity War would be a two-parter since the epic story was first announced, but whatever the case may be it doesn’t seem as though Thanos will be completely defeated by the end of the team-up movie.
Brolin took to his Instagram account to announce that he’s “Going back for more”, posting an image showing Thanos taken from a recently released poster for Infinity War:
Thanos’ presence in Avengers 4 indicates that he won’t be killed off in Infinity War, and while there could be a few different reasons behind the filmmakers opting for his survival, there are, as I see it, two main possibilities as to why. Firstly, Marvel may just have Thanos severely hurt, injured and/or depowered drastically (from loosing the gauntlet) by the end of Avengers 3, but still keep him around as an ongoing enemy for the heroes to face. Or, secondly, with the script most likely taking cues from the original Infinity Gauntlet story from the comics – in which a couple of others (that will remain unnamed as we don’t want to spoil the story for those who don’t know it yet) take possession of the Gauntlet from Thanos and so he for a very brief time has to sort of rally with the superheroes in order to stop the new wielder of the stones – drawing inspiration from that, it could be that in Avengers 3 Thanos looses the Gauntlet to somebody else, then in Avengers 4 he along with the Avengers etc. have to stop the new holder.
While the former of those options seems the most likely to us, of course we cannot say anything for sure until we see Infinity War. Thanos may very well die and Brolin could just be involved with the fourth movie simply to shoot a few flashback scenes. That’s a bit of a stretch but for all we know right now that could be the case.
Avengers 4 touches down April 26th, 2019.
