‘The Simpsons Movie 2’ In Early Stages Of Development

the-simpsons-movie-2-in-early-stages-of-developmentTen years since the first film, The Simpsons Movie 2 is currently in the earliest stages of development according to its director and writer-producer.

It’s been a decade since The Simpsons Movie was released in theatres and, in an almost fitting way, we are now reporting on the first stirrings of a sequel. The first movie took the most iconic characters on television and placed them up on the big screen with a story that really did need a two hour run time, as opposed to the usual 25 minute episode length. The length of the project from start to finish, however, was about 17 years, which is a very long period of time and chances are that the creation of The Simpsons Movie 2 could take just as long.

While nothing is absolutely set in stone just yet, there has been plenty of discussion of plans for a second big screen outing for the family from Springfield. Fans of the first film may remember that after the end credits Maggie was shown saying her first word, “Sequel”, which may well have been included for a bit of fun, or it could tell us that the filmmakers were indeed toying with the idea of making a second movie back then in 2007.

In conversation with EW, director David Silverman stated that he would like to make a sequel, before mentioning the difficulties of handling the huge workload:

“I’d love for there to be another one. We’re still a ways away from it. We talk about this and that. We’re thinking it over, but nothing’s happening just yet.…. It’s still daunting because it really knocked the stuffing out of us to do the movie and the show at the same time.”

Writer-producer Al Jean also spoke with the news outlet about the lengthy production process, with the original movie having been talked about since back in the earlier days of the TV show, and his budgetary concerns:

“I’d say [it’s in] the very earliest stages. I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great.”

It seems that there is a desire in the team behind the first movie to make a follow up and that ideas have been flowing back and forth perhaps even since The Simpsons Movie was released. Whether we’ll actually see anymore theatrical Simpsons titles for now, however, remains to be seen.

The Simpsons Movie 2 has not yet received an official release date.
