With Marvel having recently placed another successful MCU film under its belt in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the franchise continues to show no signs of slowing down. Following the studio’s soon-to-be-released titles Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther comes its largest movie to date Avengers: Infinity War. The film is set to conclude the events started all the way back in the first Iron Man which opened up the idea that Tony Stark’s world was in fact teaming with ‘remarkable people’ who then later came to form the Avengers. Captain America: The First Avenger had introduced audiences the tesseract which through the series we’ve come to know as one of six Infinity Gems that the MCUs big bad Thanos is looking to unite into his Infinity Gauntlet to become the most powerful being in existence. The third Avengers movie will undoubtedly see him doing just that.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are at the helm once again, following their sterling efforts in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, and the big challenge facing the pair will be the sheer number of characters Infinity War is bringing to the fight. We know that the usual suspects, namely Thor, Captain America, Black Widow etc., will be heavily involved, but reports earlier in the year confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be making an appearance also. In other words Thanos is going to need that Gauntlet in order to be able to hold off such a strong assembly of heroes.
Although the Mad Titan has been seen in short snippets in certain films every now and again since the first Avengers movie, we really don’t know this on screen version of the character too well yet. It’s clear that Infinity War will have to place Thanos as a main character in order for movie-goers to better understand him and the threat that he represents. In Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) we got our first scene up close with Thanos in which he appeared to be clad in some sort of light armour, but new images shared to Twitter have shed light on how the character will look in Avengers 3:
it seems as though Thanos’ suit will be fairly minimal in terms of armour and protection in the film, no doubt to allow Josh Brolin’s performance capture work, and resemblance, to shine through more clearly.
Whether or not Thanos will be making an appearance in any of the films leading up to Inifinity War‘s release next year is unknown, although it wouldn’t be out of place to see him pop up in Raganrok for a post-credits scene.
