‘Batgirl’ To Be DCEU’s Next Female-Led Superhero Film

Joss Whedon’s Batgirl solo movie will be DC/Warner Bros.’ next female-led film, according to DCEU producer Deborah Snyder.

2017 marks an all-important year for Warner Bros. Pictures with regards to its DC Extended Universe films, following mixed audience and critic reactions to the studio’s most recent offerings Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is set to kick-off the summer cinema season, with its debut in early June, and place audiences back into the theatrical DC Comics world ready for the franchise’s Avengers-style Superhero team-up film Justice League – arriving in November. Red Carpets and Premieres for Wonder Woman have already begun, and during the most recent of which, held in Shanghai, the opportunity was taken to ask the DCEU team about upcoming properties, one of which being the recently announced Batgirl project.

Just back in March, reports of Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron writer/director Joss Whedon climbing aboard to helm a Batgirl/Barbara Gordon solo film began to make waves online, and new comments from DCEU producer Deborah Snyder seem to indicate that Whedon will be getting work on the production moving pretty quickly.

Multiple sources in attendance at the Chinese red carpet for Wonder Woman took to Twitter (refer to sources section below for more) to confirm that Batgirl will be the franchise’s next female solo outing, and also that a sequel to Wonder Woman would be coming at a later date. Going by this information, it could be very possible that we see Batgirl flying into theatres as soon as 2019, if all goes well.

Whedon’s work with strong female characters, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the MCU’s Black Widow, make him an ideal fit here, and his stellar efforts with superhero films the last few years is most reassuring to fans of DC Comics. With Matt Reeves working on The Batman and Whedon making a move on Batgirl, we expect an announcement (possibly directorial) on the studio-confirmed Nightwing movie in the coming months and if these projects can perform well then we can expect Batman and his related characters to experience a whole new level (if that’s possible) of popularity and profitability.
