Currently in the middle of principle photography, production on Jurassic World 2 continues to move forward with sights set firmly on a June 2018 release. Director J.A. Bayona returns along with Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt and franchise regular BD Wong, looking to continue the story on from the rather tragic events of the previous film, Jurassic World (2015).
At this point, we know very little about the sequel other than that its central theme will be focused on the treatment of animals, I should say dinosaurs, and the ethical side of what it means to bring back extinct creatures into a world where more and more animals are being domesticated – director Colin Trevorrow himself has spoken briefly about people owning pet dinos in future films in the series. While this seems a little off given the sheer destruction of the previous instalments, not to mention the loss of life (bringing dinosaurs closer to home is probably not the best idea), it does mean that we could see a different story unfold than what we’ve seen with pretty much every other movie in the franchise up to this point where people are on remote island and end up loosing control and..so on and so forth.
As stated earlier, we know that Pratt, Dallas Howard and Wong will be back, but the upcoming film has a few new additions including that of Toby Jones, James Cromwell, Ted Levine and Rafe Spall – talented folks indeed. Director J.A. Bayona recently took to Twitter to post a first look image at the film, giving us a tease of the sort of look and feel Jurassic World 2 is going for.
The new image poses some questions about the exact direction Trevorrow is going in here. While there will clearly be a very strong sense of the danger of bringing dinosaurs back into the world, from the events of the previous movie, the picture does give off a childlike sense of wonder and awe, as if even though the potential dangers of having these creatures roaming around again is very high, there’s still some attraction to them – we still want to get to see them up close.
It could very well be that Jurassic World 2 will open up a variety of different story options going forward, one about the security implications of having dinosaurs around, one about the ethical side, one about the fascination and the intrigue that we have towards them etc. that would certainly give the series some breathing room, and make things more open for future directors that want to leave something of their own stamp on the films.
Jurassic World 2 is scheduled for a June 8th, 2018 release.
