The countdown has officially begun, as Marvel announces the start of production on what will be its largest film to date (by quite a way) Avengers: Infinity War, with Hollywood superstars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt and Tom Holland presenting a new behind-the-scenes video to mark the occasion.
The studio still has another three films to be released before Avengers 3 (Infinity War) makes its big Hulk of a debut in summer 2018, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther – which just started shooting. Of course, there’s also Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming swinging to cinemas this July – which Marvel has a shared deal with – and may possibly contain its own connections and setup for Infinity War. Nevertheless, all eyes remain on the studio’s third Avengers team-up film, and now we have received the first official look at the upcoming title.
The behind-the-scenes video begins by recapping, albeit very speedily, the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s story-arch (starting with Iron Man) revolving around the all-important Infinity Stones – which the shared films’ villainous mastermind Thanos looks to unite and place into his Infinity Gauntlet. We are then greeted with promises of amazingness by the trio of Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Tom Holland (Spider-Man/Peter Parker) and Chris Pratt (Star Lord/Peter Quill), who will all indeed be featured in Infinity War, along with many of the franchise’s other 6 billion characters (that may be a slight exaggeration).
As Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige puts it, Infinity War will be the “culmination” of all of the 17 MCU films before it, and, presumably, would end the Infinity Stones narrative while ushering in the studio’s fourth phase.
Avengers: Infinity War opens in cinemas April 27th, 2018.
