Having completed its main bulk of principal photography, Zack Snyder’s Justice League project draws ever closer to completion, now roughly a year before the film’s release. The Batman v Superman director has teased us with a steady stream of set images showing the movie’s main cast including Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jason momoa’s Aquaman, and even gave us a glimpse at J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon.
The latest, this time coming by way of IGN, has revealed a first look at .. star Amber Heard’s Mera, Aquaman’s love interest and Queen of Atlantis in the comics. There’s no doubt that in casting as strong an actress as Heard for the part Snyder aims to elevate the character’s role in his vision for the DC Extended Universe, and judging by the attire, similar in style to the full armour that we’ve seen Aquaman wearing in recent promos, shape her into a force to be reckoned with.
Momoa took to Instagram on Monday to announce that he had arrived in Northern Iceland for more Justice League shooting, with a local report from DV confirming that he along with Heard and Willem Dafoe, who plays adviser Nuidis Vulko, had indeed arrived and were filming scenes there.
Costume designer Michael Wilkinson worked very closely with Snyder to create the perfect look for Mera, and the first image shows the original concept art for the Atlantian Queen which was presumably created not long after Heard’s casting. Photo Credit goes to Snyder himself who captured the stunning image above showing Mera in full armour by the water’s edge, and incredible Icelandic landscape in the background.
Just how big the character’s role in the film will be is unclear, but it’s safe to assume that it won’t be huge since she pertains more to Aquaman’s Atlantian world and stories. Introducing Mera in Justice League makes a lot of sense given that the Aquaman solo movie will be released less than a year after it, and early character introductions create a little more room for director James Wan to breathe in. Of course, it also adds more excitement for fans to get a look at more of this world, and to see these much-loved celebrities playing such iconic roles.
