Although its huge release has been and gone, Captain America: Civil War continues to make headlines. The film is one of Marvel’s largest to date, taking in over $1.1 billion worldwide, but also in the sense of the implications it leaves for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chris Evans’ Captain America continues to show the definitive leadership qualities the character so often had in the comics, but that’s also seen him gradually become the centrepiece of the MCU, with the studio deliberately choosing to name their big Civil War showcase under the Captain America brand. All the while, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man has very much begun to take a second place role among the ever-growing pantheon of heroes.
The shift in focus, from Iron Man to The Cap, may also present Marvel with an opportunity it would evidently like to take. According to ComicBook, the studio has officially submitted Civil War for Hollywood awards season, with the first “For Your Consideration” screening set to be held on September 23rd.
While Marvel movies have been nominated in the technical categories, visual effects for example, they have never actually won an Oscar, but given the overall trend it’s not surprising as blockbuster action films do not usually win. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was in fact the last big budget movie to do well, like ten wins well, at the Oscars, and that was over 13 years ago.
Captain America 3 could spark the first wave of Oscar nominations for movies in the genre moving forward, and with the amount of work that went into making the film, including the amount of characters directors Joe and Anthony Russo had to use, we’d say that would be well deserved indeed.
