With this year’s CinemaCon in full swing, Sony used the panel to unveil its upcoming film slate for the next few years, including the previously rumoured Men In Black/Jump Street crossover (thanks to the 2014 email hack). The studio announced the film’s official title as MIB 23, a blending of the Men In Black title and what will be the 23 from Jump Street‘s third outing. Many are still wondering what the movie will entail and how these two franchises could work when mixed together.
Of course, the two are connected by genre, being buddy cop movies, but that still doesn’t give us much to go on in terms of how the two duos will work side by side. Will one pair be transported somehow into the world of the other? Or will it play out as both have coexisted in the same world with little to no knowledge of the other? Know doubt we’ll find out more closer to the film’s release date, which the studio has yet to give up.
It’s likely that our favourite Jump Street team of Jonah Hill (Schmidt) and Channing Tatum (Jenko) will return, but as for the legendary Will smith (Jay) and Tommy Lee Jones (Kay)reprising their MIB roles.. don’t hold your breathe. At this point it’s highly unlikely that either of the alien-busting pair will be making appearances, as it seems Sony wishes to start principal photography this June and have phased out the original films in order to reboot the franchise. Although having Smith and Jones alongside Hill and Tatum would have been very cool to see, we feel that it probably does make most sense to freshen up the MIB franchise in order to accommodate the world and events of the Jump Street series.
Perhaps Jenko and Schmidt will find themselves recruited by the CIA to go undercover, but this time on the hunt for extraterrestrials.. who are also.. drug dealers??
Who knows, but we can’t wait to see!
MIB 23 is yet to receive a release date.
