20th Century Fox have revealed the official synopsis for their upcoming film X-Men: Apocalypse; this time it’s Gods vs Mutants.
Director Bryan Singer’s return to the mutant franchise last summer, with X-Men: Days of Future Past, was more than welcomed by both fans and critics alike, and stood out as one of the best films of the year. Having now redeemed the series from misfires such as X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Singer has had his work cut out for him to raise the bar even higher after the gripping narrative of DoFP. Using a character like Apocalypse, or En Sabah Nur, was a great choice for him to push the stakes further than ever before whilst also introducing one of the team’s most powerful enemies.
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be the culmination of all the current trilogy’s events starting from First Class, and will thankfully continue along with the re-established timeline reached at the end of DoFP in which Jean Gray, Scott Summers and Professor X are all alive and well. The film is set not long after the previous movie and so we will be introduced to Scott and Jean as their younger selves, played by Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner respectively.
Expect to see X-Men: Apocalypse in cinemas May 19th, 2016.
